From the President’s Desk – Blog #6

I think I can speak for the majority of Drake’s student body, when I say thank goodness it’s Thanksgiving Break. Before I give some fun Turkey Day facts I would like to give a few shout outs. My first congratulation goes to Drake’s Football team on winning the PFL championship for the second year in a row! We are proud of you guys, thanks for giving it your all for two consecutive years. The International Students Association also put on a widely attended and successful event on Saturday full of performances and delicious food.  Thanks for all of the students who made that event such a success! Lastly, Drake’s choirs performed a phenomenal concert on Sunday to a full audience in Sheslow – fantastic job!

Now,  in honor of this great American holiday, here are a few  fun facts… Enjoy!

• The first Thanksgiving lasted 3 days

• In the US, about 280 million turkeys are sold for Thanksgiving

• Although, Thanksgiving is widely considered an American holiday, it is also celebrated on the second Monday in October in Canada

• In 1939, President Roosevelt proclaimed that Thanksgiving would take place on November 23rd, not November 30th, as a way to spur economic growth and extend the Christmas shopping season. (Black Friday anyone?)

Have a fun and safe Thanksgiving  –  eat a lot, catch up on sleep and enjoy the last bit of home before the last stretch of finals!
