The Drake University Student Senate is comprised of full-time students that are committed to upholding the interests of their constituents and fellow students. These students are elected every year and hold a variety of positions and roles within the Student Senate. Senate positions fall within the following groups: Executive Officers, Academic Senators, Senators-at-Large, Equity and Inclusion Senators, First-Year Senator, Ex-Officio Senate Members, and Non-Senator Committee Members.
Meet the 31st Session of Student Senate:
The Student Senate Executive Officers are comprised of the Student Body President, the Student Body Treasurer, the Vice President of Student Life, and the Vice President of Student Activities.
Elections for Executive Officers are conducted in the spring term of each academic year and the first elections held for the election season.
The Student Senate Academic Senators are comprised of Senators for the College of Business and Public Administration, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School Journalism and Mass Communication, the School of Education, and the Fine Arts Senator.
Elections for Academic Senators are conducted in the spring term of each academic year after Executive Officer elections.
The Student Senate Senators-at-Large is comprised of Senators for Academic Affairs, Campus Engagement, Community Outreach, Facilities and Technology, Health and Safety, Organizational Council, Student Affairs, and Student Services.
Elections for Senators-at-Large are conducted in the spring term of each academic year after Executive Officer elections.
The Student Senate Equity and Inclusion Senators are comprised of the Equity and Inclusion Senator and The Equity and Inclusion Senator-at-Large. The Equity and Inclusion Senators participate in monthly UNITY Table discussions and their purpose is to maintain a voice and vote of diversity on the floor of the Student Senate.
Elections for the Equity and Inclusion Senator-at-Large position are conducted in the spring term of each academic year after Executive Officer elections while the Equity and Inclusion Senator is elected at the annual Diversity Convention, organized and moderated by the Chair of the Student Affairs Committee.
The Student Senate First-Year Senator serves as a voice and representative for the first-year class on Senate, chairs the First-Year Interest Committee, and works to further the interests of all first-year students.
The First-Year Senator is elected by and from the first-year class during the fall semester to serve until the end of the Session.
Ex-Officio Senate Members are comprised of the Election Commission, Historian, Graphic Design Officer, Parliamentarian, Public Affairs Officer, Secretary, Student Body Auditor, and Web Liaison. Ex-Officio Senate Members serve to further the needs and interests of the Student Senate and the student body through their individual roles and positions.
Through an application process, Ex-Officio Members are appointed to their positions at the end of the spring semester by the Executive Officers and serve for a full year.
