Hi friends! My name is Bakari Caldwell and I will serve as your Community Outreach Senator-at-Large for the 31st Student Senate session. I am a junior at Drake and I am from Oswego, Illinois. I am double-majoring in English (following the Culture & Identity track) and Secondary Education (with an endorsement in English), and I also will graduate with a music minor.
Outside of Senate, it seems that I really try to stay busy. I am a Resident Assistant in Herriott Hall, on the executive board of the Coalition of Black Students serving as the First-Year Mentor, and am an intern for the Herb & Karen Baum Symposium of Ethics and the Professions-Beyond Diversity and Towards Repair: Living into a New Racial Vision. I also am a proud member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the world’s oldest and largest fraternal society in music, Rainbow Union, and I work at Firebirds Wood Fired Grill in West Des Moines.
This year, I want to take concrete steps towards truly bettering the relationship with the University and the community that it exists inside of. DU is a guest of Des Moines and not the other way around; therefore, improving this relationship is essential to our sustainability and it upholds the community missions the University has claimed a priority. Putting on events, dialogues, programs and more will provide stepping stones in the right direction, making sure that all of the stakeholders are at the table, and are being served adequately. Here’s towards a fun-and hard-year!
