Student Senate Spotlights – The Executive Council of the 30th Session

As the 30th Session is coming to a close, I believe it is important to meet the people behind the positions that make Senate run smooth and efficiently! The leaders of the Executive Council of Senate have put in countless hours to make Senate and our campus awesome for students and faculty alike. Student Senate Spotlights have been a fun way for us to showcase our members of Senate and for you to get to know them a little better! But, as we now close the final chapter of the 30th Session, this week in the Final Spotlight:

Thalia Anguiano – Student Body President

Year In School: Senior

Major: LPS and Public Relations

Hometown: Bensenville, IL

Campus Involvement: Alpha Phi Omega, Mock Trial, Delta Theta Phi and La Fuerza Latina

What made you join Student Senate? “I ran for what was previously known as the Diversity Interest Senator position last year and I was able to see the amount of change that came out of that. Being able to work with UNITY Roundtable, implement Identities 101 as well as see some of the work that UNITY did to empower themselves was amazing. I knew after that that I wanted to continue to serve the student body, I wanted to continue to advocate for the voices of the students and impact this institution on an internal and external level.”

Hobbies/Interests: “I like to sing and pretend that I can play piano sometimes. When I do get some free time, I like to listen to acapella groups on YouTube and watch inspirational speakers. It is a good de-stressor after a long week. This may seem kind of childish, but I love to take out a coloring page/book and just sit in my apartment or outside and color.”

Favorite Book(s): “I’m not a big book person, however, a book that was super interesting was the story behind Henrietta Lacks. If you haven’t read it, I highly encourage you to do so.”

Favorite Movie(s): “Remember The Titans, hands down.”

Favorite TV Show(s): How To Get Away With Murder

Advice to Everyone from Thalia: “While this is my last year at Drake, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to be open-minded and get to learn about those around you who are different, have different opinions and experiences. Take those differences and challenge them, celebrate them and reflect on them. Learn to empower yourself and those around you and take that motivation to do good things. Be conscientious of those with whom you are working with around you and speak out when you see something that shouldn’t be happening. Often times, we hear a lot of people say that they want to change this or that, but rarely is any action taken to make that change. Aspire to be different, go against the norm and do something; even if it’s the smallest of things. You truly never know how much of a difference those small things can make in a person’s life or change the culture of a place. Challenge the system that we have been so accustomed to as much as you can and stand up for yourself and others while knowing your place. Also, be aware of the fact that you are ALWAYS learning. No one has all the answers and if you think you do, or you know of someone who thinks so, then that’s probably a red flag that you should do some more reflecting. Life is a learning experience–continue to be hungry to learn, be curious, ask questions and give answers when you can. Before I continue to write on an essay, I’m going to stop this right here. Thanks for everything, Bulldogs! And as always, if anyone ever needs anything, you can reach me at”

Kevin Kane – Vice President of Student Life

Year In School: Junior

Major: Elementary Education, with endorsements in Reading and English as a Second Language

Hometown: Minneapolis, MN

Campus Involvement: VIP and D+ Improv

What made you join Student Senate? “The opportunity to advocate for the student body and impact real change around the university.”

Hobbies/Interests: “I love to play music (guitar, piano, drums, violin, and mandolin) and enjoy watching TV shows in unhealthy amounts.”

Favorite Book(s): The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Favorite Movie(s): Mr. Nobody

Favorite TV Show(s): It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Advice to First-Year Students from Kevin: “A piece of advice that I would give to first-year students is to not be afraid to look dumb. Some of the most fun experiences of your lives are going to happen when you look like a complete fool. ”

Nick Jenderko – Vice President of Student Activities

Year In School: Junior

Major: Health Sciences with a minor in Spanish and a concentration in Leadership

Hometown: Eden Prairie, MN

Campus Involvement: Student Activities Board, CPHS Ambassadors, Orientation Leader and PMAC

What made you join Student Senate? “I joined Student Senate because I originally saw it as an opportunity to be very informed about all aspects of the university and to be involved with a lot of positive changes happening on campus. After being involved with Senate in different capacities over the past few years, I have also really enjoyed all of the relationships I have built and the communities I have been able to be a part of.”

Hobbies/Interests: “I enjoy eating, traveling, jamming to Shawn Mendes and the song Lip Gloss by Lil Mama, binge watching/reading Harry Potter, watching Netflix shows, and spending time with my roommates and friends.”

Favorite Book(s): Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Favorite Movie(s): The Last Holiday or Matilda

Favorite TV Show(s): Heroes and Grey’s Anatomy

Advice to First-Year Students from Nick: “Something that I have learned at Drake that has become my biggest piece of advice to new students is to do something because you want to do it, not because someone else tells you to do it.”

JD Stehwien – Student Body Treasurer

Year In School: Junior

Major: Quantitative Economics

Hometown: Kansas City, MO

Campus Involvement: Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp), Interfraternity Council, Residence Life

Favorite Book(s): Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

Favorite Movie(s): The Shawshank Redemption

Favorite TV Show(s): Fargo
