Student Senate Spotlight – Grace Rogers

Meet the person behind the position! Student Senate Spotlight is a fun way for us to showcase our members of Senate and for you to get to know them a little better! As we get closer to the end of the semester, I will begin posting two spotlights per week. This week in the Spotlight:

Grace Rogers – Student Services Senator-at-Large

Year In School: Senior

Major: Public Relations and Political Science

Hometown: Lenexa, KS

Campus Involvement: Student Activists for Gender Equality, Drake Broadcasting System, Voice of Choice, Public Relations Student Society of America, Mortar Board National Honor Society

What made you join Student Senate? “I am very passionate about the issue of campus sexual assault. Drake does a pretty good job, but we aren’t perfect. I ran for Senate because I wanted to get us as close to perfect as possible. ”

Hobbies/Interests: Knitting, reading, asking underclassmen to swipe for me.

Favorite Book(s): Currently, The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutowski

Favorite Movie(s): Midnight In Paris

Favorite TV Show(s): Brooklyn Nine-Nine

A Message to Underclassmen: “If you ever want to swipe for me, I’m always down for Hubbell/Quad.”

Jackie Heymann – Campus Advancement Senator-at-Large

Year In School: Senior

Major: Political Science and Sociology

Hometown: St. Louis, MO

Campus Involvement: Drake Hillel, Strategic Diversity Action Team, Social Justice Living Learning Community, Disability Action and Awareness Community, UNITY Roundtable, Kappa Alpha Theta

What made you join Student Senate? “After being highly involved in other areas around campus, I thought that I had experience and a base of knowledge that would assist me in serving the student body well. Also, I am very passionate about furthering equity and inclusion and I thought that Senate could benefit from having another person with that mindset around the table.”

Hobbies/Interests: Baking, running, hammock-ing, hiking, traveling.

Favorite Book(s): Defacing Power by Clarissa Hayward

Favorite Movie(s): Wet Hot American Summer

Favorite TV Show(s): New Girl

A Word of Advice: “Remember that life is not just accumulating lines on your resume. Make sure that you are spending time, and cherishing that time, with those you love.”

Kenia Calderon – Equity and Inclusion Senator

Year In School: Senior

Major: Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship

Hometown: Des Moines, IA

Campus Involvement: La Fuerza Latina

What made you join Student Senate? “The efforts to make our campus more inclusive for all of its students are far from being done so I wanted to make sure I was in the right organization to make positives changes.”

Hobbies/Interests: “Painting and drawing, activism, protesting, politics, business, and cheese.”

Favorite Book(s): Sonio Sotomayor

Favorite Movie(s): 13 Going on 30

Favorite TV Show(s): Friends

General Advice: “Even as an undocumented student, I have been able to advocate for several changes that make our campus a better place for all. If I can do it then so can anyone at Drake.”

Meet the person behind the position! Student Senate Spotlight is a fun way for us to showcase our members of Senate and for you to get to know them a little better! This week in the Spotlight:

Beth LeValley – School of Journalism and Mass Communication Academic Senator

Major: Marketing and News/Internet Journalism

Hometown: Waukee, IA

Campus Involvement: President/Editorial Director of Spoon University, member of Drake Chorale, previously a writer for the TD & Drake Magazine.

What made you join Student Senate? “I want the best for the SJMC students, and I think I can contribute to that. There are fantastic students on Student Senate this year, and I think there’s potential for big change on Drake’s campus. After watching senate function for the past few years, I’ve realized that students can make a big difference.”

Hobbies/Interests: “I love cooking and baking, including decorating cakes and cupcakes. I also am a huge advocate for Des Moines, so I love going out and seeing the opportunities Des Moines has to offer.”

Favorite Book(s): Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Favorite Movie(s): Across the Universe

Favorite TV Show(s): Parks & Rec

General Advice: “Advice for underclassmen: Go out and get involved! Make new friends. You’re never too old to meet new people. Be aware of your surroundings, respect everyone and have an open mind — then you’ll be successful in the real world.”
